Some dreams take centuries. For the Mazzei family — Tuscan wine royalty since the 1400s — the dream of crafting the ultimate Sangiovese took root in 2006, when they acquired Il Caggio, a historic hamlet nestled in the hills of Chianti Classico. Surrounded by forests and olive groves, the crown jewel of the estate is a 6.5-hectare clos planted entirely to Sangiovese. After ten patient years of soil study, clone trials, and organic conversion, Ipsus was born.

Vinified parcel by parcel and fermented spontaneously, the wine ages gracefully in a mix of new tonneaux, large casks, and sleek ceramic vessels. The vineyard’s rare mix of clay and alberese stone delivers structure, minerality, and finesse — the hallmarks of great Sangiovese.

Ipsus means “he himself” in Latin — a nod to the wine’s ability to stand entirely on its own. No flash, no fuss, just a soulful expression of site, grape, and vision. From the family that helped define Chianti, this is a new benchmark for Gran Selezione: powerful, pure, and dripping with personality.

Did you know?

“Ipsus” is Latin for “he himself” — a word once used to describe nobility, solitude, and distinction. The name honors the wine’s self-contained brilliance: a single-vineyard Gran Selezione that needs no introduction, no explanation. It stands alone — confident, charismatic, and entirely itself.
